Thetis Class
(Class 420)

The original

The five units of the Thetis class (Najade (P 6054), Triton (P 6055), Thetis (P 6052), Theseus (P 6056), Hermes (P-6053)) were originally designed in the early 1960ies as submarine hunters and went through different design stages; the most well-known unit is possibly the "Najade", which had a characteristic superstructure to accommodate ahospital section ahead of the main superstructure. In the German Navy, they were mostly used for anti-submarine duties, for which they were armed with two to four torpedo tubes, an anti-submarine launcher and a 40mm anti-aircraft gun. They also used various mines and depth charges.

All units were transferred to the Hellenic Navy of Greece in the early 1990ies , and were kept in service until early this century as gunboats, which were equipped with a second 40mm gun instead of the anti-submarine launcher. The most well-know unit was the Agon (P 66), which was sunk quite spectacularly in a target practice exercise in 2008 using two penguin missiles.

Commercially available plan to build a model (in German):

The model

The Model is designed in 1:200 scale. It can be built as a model for static display or as a working RC boat. It is set up to enable radio control functions (RC), with the twin shaft propulsion and  the rudders fully functional. As the model is rather small, the model can only be used in calm water conditions. Additional functionality can be added by a skilled modeler, too. However, this model is not set up to be ready to run, it requires refinement and is only suitable for skilled model builders.

The model can be built with the superstructure of the Thetis class units, or it can be built with the Najade superstructure.

The model is also available in other scales, e.g. 1:350. Smaller scales, however, only are possible as static models with no RC function.

The assembly manual and drawings are available for download in the download section. Similarly, the basic hull (without holes, decks, and fittings) can be downloaded there.

The Kit

The kit is available through Shapeways:

  1. Only the printed parts, directly from Shapeways

  2. The total model consists of four sets of printed parts: Hull, Superstructure, Details 1 of 2, Details 2 of 2. The kit also includes the parts to build a static model, the shafts and props for a static model are available separately.

  3. A separate superstructure is available if you want to build the Najade, which has a different (extended) superstructure than the other vessels of the Thetis class.

  4. The assembly manual and drawings are available in the download section.
